Hamilton Arts District Amphitheater, City of Rahway, Union County, NJ

The City of Rahway acquired a former commercial laundry site that has suffered considerable flood damage in the recent past. Since the site is located adjacent to the City's Arts District, the acquisition has led to the expansion of the Arts District. As a result, the expansion and the many redevelopment projects in the municipality have provided numerous cultural arts venues to support the growth in population.

As the City Engineer, Bohler Engineering has been retained to design an amphitheater to utilize the space for arts purposes. Since the site is located within the Floodway and the Flood Hazard Area, an amphitheater is an innovative way to utilize space that could not be used otherwise. The amphitheater structure will be a prominent feature in the Arts District and will be designed to complement the surrounding district structures, while also accommodating the depth of flood waters.

Bohler Engineering has also been retained to provide a full range of services, including the preparation of conceptual plans, design plans and specifications, NJDEP permitting, bid documents, construction administration, and construction management and observation for the City of Rahway, which will be the redeveloper for this project.

Essex Street Riverfront Park, City of Rahway, Union County, NJ

As part of one of the City of Rahway's many redevelopment plans, the City acquired a 7.9-acre site which was formerly comprised of junk yards, abandoned truck depots and rundown homes. The structures were demolished and the site cleaned up by the City, which selected a redeveloper to construct an 86-unit townhouse redevelopment project as Phase I of the redevelopment plan.

The 1.4-acre Essex Street Riverfront Park is the second and final phase of the redevelopment plan to convert a blighted mixed-use area along the Rahway River and to complement the townhouse development. The park is unique in that it focuses on human interaction with wildlife. Plant material specifically selected to attract flora and fauna has been incorporated, including butterfly gardens along a meandering walking path which follows the Rahway River. In addition, in order to enhance the human aspect of the design, a Life Trail System has been proposed along the walking path for the City's senior citizens to enhance their physical abilities.

As the City Engineer, Bohler Engineering has been retained to provide a full range of services, including the preparation of conceptual plans, design plans and specifications, NJDEP permitting, bid documents, construction administration and observation for the City of Rahway.
