Celebrating STEM Day

08 November, 2018

It’s National STEM Day! Bohler’s teams are celebrating by embracing their passion for educating students in engineering and inspiring them to pursue careers in STEM. Through mentorship, engagements, events, and more, we frequently seek opportunities to share our knowledge of the field with students of all ages, and offer a glimpse into the workings of the land development industry.

Bohler’s engineers and leaders have recently engaged students in conversations about civil engineering and the work we do at colleges along the East Coast.

Supporting Land Development Education at Virginia Tech

Project Manager Michael O’Shaughnessy recently presented about the land development process for a class of Virginia Tech students. He was invited by the school’s Land Development Design Initiative (LDDI) within the Department of Civil and Environmental Engineering, a program that prepares students for careers in the land development industry. Bohler has been a longtime supporter of the program, annually mentoring student design groups and partaking in speaking opportunities such as this.

Inspiring Women In STEM at Pfeiffer University

The course “Women in Science” at Pfeiffer University in Misenheimer, North Carolina regularly invites women in STEM fields, like Bohler Design Engineer Taylor Gelinas, to speak to the class about their work and experiences. Taylor proudly accepted the invitation, and shared with the students some basics about civil engineering and Bohler’s work. She also talked about her experiences as a female engineer, including how Bohler has aided her career growth through our Women in Engineering group and emphasis on learning and development. Through her presentation, she was able to spark an interest in civil engineering with students that lacked prior exposure to the field.

Teaching Students at the University of Delaware

Bohler Principal Adam Benosky left students energized about a career in civil engineering after presenting to the student chapter of the American Society of Civil Engineers at the University of Delaware. He spoke about the land development process from an engineering perspective, using Bohler’s King of Prussia project as an example. He also covered some basics of Bohler’s other services, including land surveying and landscape architecture.
