Celebrating Success by Lending Helping Hands

18 February, 2020

After completing a $25-million renovation and expansion to Boston’s Community Servings Food Campus, the project team celebrated by volunteering their time to support the organization’s overall mission – helping clients maintain their health.

Already delivering more than 2,500 nutritious, medically tailored meals per day and providing hands-on culinary training, Community Servings hopes the new space will allow them to continue to increase food production and service offerings throughout Massachusetts. The organization however, depends on volunteer support, so Bohler’s team took their role a step further, sending along a crew of eager helping hands to prepare produce, portion snacks, and assemble individual meal bags.

Bohler provided civil engineering and permitting services for the three-story, 31,000-SF renovation and expansion project, which includes additional classrooms, a commercial kitchen, administrative offices, and community gathering spaces. Bohler’s design incorporated new utility connections, parking lot improvements, and new stormwater management facilities, while coordinating approvals from Boston Water and Sewer Commission and the Public Improvement Commission.

With the campus’ improvements, Community Servings hopes to increase production to 1.5 million meals per year, furthering its food and nutrition program services to individuals living with critical and chronic illnesses. In addition to producing meals, the organization provides food service job training, culinary lessons, and nutrition education classes. While seeing a project design come to life is rewarding in itself, Bohler’s team was inspired by the organization’s mission, and jumped at the opportunity to make a positive impact on the community.

It’s really rewarding just to see a completed project that required a lot of teamwork and coordination. On top of that, we had a chance to use the new space to give back to the community.
