Inspiring Wonder in More Ways Than One: Happy Engineers Week

Today marks the start of Engineers Week 2018.

Throughout the week, Bohler is celebrating our engineers and their contributions to the land development industry as well as our surrounding communities. In an ongoing effort to bring engineering to life for our neighboring schools, our team is also inspiring young students to pursue a career in STEM.

Organized annually by DiscoverE , Engineers Week celebrates and honors engineers and the difference they make in our world. In keeping with this year’s theme, Engineers: Inspiring Wonder, the week-long event also seeks to increase public dialogue about the importance of the profession worldwide.

Our engineers directly impact the communities where we live, work and raise our families. Their desire to find solutions, design change and fulfill community needs is inspiring. To celebrate, we asked our teams across Bohler’s footprint about their chosen career path and what it means to them.

What inspired you to become an engineer?

“Great math teachers in junior high and high school. Developing a passion for math, created my desire to choose engineering as my college degree. Once in college, the desire to design took shape and guided me towards the land development side of the business. I married a math teacher – go figure.”

“My dad and older brother are both civil engineers and I was impressed by the projects they worked on and the effect it had on the community.”

“I would drive by sites under construction and be fascinated with how it was being built. I just wanted to learn how it all worked.”

“The skills and knowledge that I have learned are those I can use anywhere in the world, specifically to help others in need where poor or nonexistent infrastructure exists.”

What do you enjoy most about engineering?

“I love figuring out what a client needs, coming up with a plan to make it happen, and then executing on that plan and solving all the challenges that arise along the way.”

“It’s rewarding when you can come up with a creative way to make something work when it may have seemed as though it may not have been possible/feasible at first.”

“Two things – (1) the puzzle and problem solving side of design and (2) the appreciation it gives me for the world around us; I love being able to actually point to something and say I helped make it happen (even if it’s just an inlet/fire hydrant/sidewalk).”

“I always love seeing something that I helped design on the computer come to fruition in real life.”
