Restoration at Long Island National Cemetery Helps Honor Fallen Veterans

07 November, 2018

Bohler is helping to bring a much-needed restoration to the Long Island National Cemetery in Suffolk County, NY that will better honor the lives of the veterans buried there.

The project entails repairing the fencing around the perimeter of the 365-acre cemetery, damaged from vehicle crashes and harsh weather, and constructing a columbarium with 6,240 niches for veterans’ remains. Bohler provided civil engineering and landscape architecture services for the project.

The Long Island National Cemetery was established in 1936 to meet a need for burial space for fallen soldiers from World War I. The cemetery is now filled with 350,000 veterans and families.

Bohler coordinated extensively to obtain federal approvals for the project, while meeting critical tolerances and design criteria for the columbarium. Bohler also worked with the client to develop a system to restore and upgrade the perimeter fence without altering the historic features.
