Revitalization of Lincoln Square Begins; Historic Courthouse Redevelopment Breaks Ground

Shovels pierce the ground as the first of several revitalization efforts in Worcester’s historic Lincoln Square district is finally underway. The Worcester Courthouse, built in the 1840s and abandoned for more than a decade, will be restored and given new life as an affordable housing community. The historic redevelopment will provide inclusive housing opportunities to families of all income levels, furthering the city’s goal of creating more workforce residences.

In addition to 117 residential units, the new space will feature a fitness center, clubhouse, interior bike storage, and outdoor gathering spaces. Nearby bus and MBTA stations will offer easy access and create a walkable vibe throughout the community.

As part of the project team, Bohler provided civil engineering services and assisted with permitting to transform the historic structure. Bohler’s team tackled the challenge of reusing existing utilities wherever possible. Upgrades are planned for both the sanitary sewer and stormwater runoff systems to bring them into compliance with today’s standards. Damaged or poorly placed pipes were slated for demolition, and new, relocated utility connections designed.

The courthouse sits adjacent to two other historic buildings in Lincoln Square anxiously awaiting restoration. Both the Worcester Memorial Auditorium and the Lincoln Square Boys Club building have been purchased from the City by developers planning to bring them back to glory.
