Affordable housing developers are expanding their scope by incorporating community spaces and mixed-use components. A Bohler project in Brooklyn, New York, represents this unique approach by combining affordable housing with light manufacturing workspaces.

203 Newport Street, the first of its kind in the city, offers low-cost incubator spaces for local startups as part of the housing community. The project spans 180,000 square feet and includes 174 affordable and supportive housing units, with 87 units designated for the homeless and 35 units for seniors and veterans.

Bohler’s Manhattan team managed the site civil engineering and permit expediting. The apartments sit atop a podium housing 40,000 square feet of light manufacturing space, divided between two residential towers, with a 14,000-square-foot courtyard on either side.
