ChristianaCare has announced plans to establish a new healthcare campus in Aston, Pennsylvania, featuring a neighborhood hospital and a health center.

The facility will be developed in partnership with Emerus Holdings, Inc., and is projected to open in late 2026.

Neighborhood or micro-hospitals are a relatively new concept in the state, recently made possible by new legislation. These facilities have ground-floor emergency rooms that handle urgent cases, like stitches, falls, heart attacks, or strokes, but lack operating rooms. Instead, they stabilize patients and transfer them to larger hospitals for more advanced care.

The floors above the ER are tailored to the specific needs of the community; for instance, in an older community, the facility might include a cardiologist’s office. While not full-service hospitals, these facilities do offer imaging services such as CT scans, X-rays, and MRIs.

Bohler’s Philadelphia team is providing comprehensive site civil engineering, permitting, lighting, and landscaping services for the Aston campus. One of the primary challenges has been navigating complex zoning text amendments and adapting to an unfamiliar and nuanced approval process, requiring strategic problem-solving and close collaboration with local authorities.

ChristianaCare selected Delaware County following a thorough market assessment that analyzed demographic trends, healthcare service availability, community input, and feedback from local leaders. The campus will feature a 24/7 neighborhood hospital with 10 inpatient beds, an emergency department, and diagnostic services, supported by virtual consultations in neurology and cardiology. A second-floor health center will provide outpatient services including primary and specialty care.

ChristianaCare, already serving southeastern Pennsylvania through several primary care practices and health centers, currently serves as the medical home for 25,000 residents across the region. This new facility expands its mission to deliver accessible, high-quality care close to home.
