Cost-Saving Solutions for MD Anderson Cancer Center
With a shared commitment to delivering world-class cancer treatment to northern New Jersey, MD Anderson Cancer Center and Summit Medical teamed up to develop a state-of-the-art facility within the Green at Florham Park corporate campus. Located adjacent to another Summit Medical office building, the cancer center provides increased convenience for patients as a one-stop shop.
To bring the project to life, Bohler tackled challenges involving the municipal code, existing site features, and construction surprises. By remaining focused on the big picture, the team identified creative solutions to ensure the successful delivery of the premier facility.
Forward-Thinking Parking Design
Given the building’s use, the code required 20% of the parking spaces be designated as Americans with Disabilities Act (ADA) accessible spaces. Working closely with Rockefeller Development to obtain parking data showing typical ADA space usage during peak hours from its other facilities, Bohler secured township approval to reduce the requirement, while maintaining sufficient availability.
Still, with a forward-thinking mindset, the team graded the parking lot to allow for the ADA spaces, but striped them as standard spaces. This creative solution enabled MD Anderson to provide more standard parking that can easily be restriped for ADA in the future.
Seeing the Big Picture
Identifying an opportunity to avoid a lengthy permitting process, Bohler coordinated the design and approval of a bridge over wetlands at the entrance to the health complex.
With the big picture in mind, the team designed both the bridge and entrance driveway to allow for delivery of the enormous particle accelerator used to create the radiation for cancer treatments.
Adapting During Construction
After uncovering an existing water line under the proposed building footprint, the contractor turned to Bohler for direction. Proving adaptable, the team quickly found a way reroute it and keep the project moving forward.
Award-Winning Impact
Bohler’s successful designs allowed MD Anderson to not only bring their world-class cancer treatment to the area, but also improve the patient experience along the way. Earning a Business Attraction Award from the Morris County Economic Development Corporation, the project was recognized for its impact on attracting business in Morris County.
Bohler’s long-standing history at the 180-acre Green at Florham Park Corporate Center includes six of the campus’ nine parcels over the last 15 years.
