Bohler is supporting the redevelopment of the historic SPS Technologies property in Abington, Pennsylvania, helping to advance plans for a new state-of-the-art aerospace manufacturing facility that will restore critical U.S. manufacturing capacity while honoring the site’s legacy.
Founded in 1903, SPS Technologies has long been a cornerstone of aerospace manufacturing in the region, producing high-tolerance fasteners and precision components for major aerospace and defense clients such as Boeing and General Electric. The company’s previous factory — more than a century old — was lost in a devastating fire, prompting plans to rebuild a modern facility on the same site.
Bohler is providing integrated planning, site civil engineering, and landscape architecture services for the new two-story, 350,000 SF manufacturing and office facility. The team is helping manage a large group of consultants while navigating the complexities of redeveloping a historic industrial property originally built before modern zoning regulations were in place. The project is moving forward on an accelerated timeline, with reconstruction targeted for completion by the end of 2028 or early 2029.
“This is a unique opportunity to help bring an essential manufacturing facility back online while reimagining how it fits within the surrounding community,” said Bohler Project Manager Ayesha Sohail. “Our team is focused on delivering a design that supports advanced manufacturing operations while enhancing environmental performance and neighborhood compatibility.”
With portions of the property within the 100-year floodplain, the design includes significant upgrades to the site’s stormwater management systems. These improvements include new water quality systems and naturalized bioretention basins throughout the site. Bohler’s landscape architecture team has designed robust landscape buffers with enhanced tree plantings to help screen the facility from nearby residential areas while enhancing the overall appearance of the site.
Architecturally, the design also incorporates thoughtful elements that connect the new facility to its historic roots. Salvaged brick from the original building will be reused on the façade of the new structure as a nod to the site’s past, and the iconic Standard Press Steel concrete sign will be integrated into the new design.
Sustainability is another key focus of the redevelopment. The project team is targeting LEED Silver certification, with plans to incorporate solar panels and other energy-efficient systems designed to reduce the facility’s carbon footprint.
“We want to build as green a facility as we can,” said Dan Gear, vice president and general manager of SPS Technologies. “At the same time, it’s important to us that the surrounding community feels good about what’s being built here.”
The project has garnered strong support from state and local leadership due to the critical role the facility plays in national aerospace and defense supply chains. Through close collaboration with SPS Technologies and the broader project team, Bohler is helping move the redevelopment forward — bringing advanced manufacturing back to the site while preserving the legacy of a facility that has served the aerospace industry for more than a century.
