Two Bohler Projects Recognized at NJ Smart Growth Awards 

Bohler is proud to celebrate two projects recognized with 2026 Smart Growth Awards from New Jersey Future: The Crossings at Brick Church Station in East Orange and The Kempson in Metuchen. The two developments were among five projects honored this year as part of the organization’s 24th annual awards program.

Since 2002, New Jersey Future’s Smart Growth Awards have recognized projects, plans, and policies that demonstrate thoughtful approaches to land use and sustainable development across the state. More than 150 projects, plans, and policies have received the recognition.

The Crossings at Brick Church Station | East Orange

The Crossings at Brick Church Station is transforming an underutilized commercial corridor into a mixed-use, transit-oriented district centered around one of East Orange’s key transportation hubs. The development brings mixed-income housing together with fresh food, retail, dining, healthcare services, and new public spaces, supporting the city’s broader revitalization efforts.

Bohler’s engineering team provided site design and permitting for the overall development, while its integrated landscape architecture team designed the central promenade and rooftop amenity space.

The Kempson | Metuchen

The Kempson transforms the former Gulton battery warehouse and factory site into a five-story, 272-unit residential community in Metuchen. The redevelopment incorporates new housing and amenities while also supporting improvements to the adjoining Peter J. Barnes III Wildlife Preserve, including walking trails, recreational space, and an extension of the Middlesex Greenway.

Bohler provided site planning, civil engineering, entitlement, and environmental regulatory expertise, helping the project team navigate the complexities of redeveloping the historic industrial site while balancing stakeholder goals and community priorities.

Together, the two projects demonstrate how thoughtful redevelopment can turn underutilized properties into more connected, walkable communities.
