Goucher College and Edenwald Senior Living are collaborating on Maryland’s first university-based retirement community (URC), blending Goucher’s academic offerings with Edenwald’s senior living amenities.

The liberal arts college and Towson-based retirement community are expanding their longstanding partnership to establish an integrated URC campus. Residents will have access to a variety of educational, cultural, and social activities, including opportunities to participate in Goucher classes, study abroad programs, and a cooperative community garden.

To support the Baltimore County development, Bohler’s MidAtlantic team is providing site civil engineering design, permitting, survey, and landscape architecture services, ensuring a seamless blend of residential and academic facilities.

URCs are a growing trend among higher education institutions, address the needs of an aging population and countering declining enrollments. URCs foster vibrant environments for older adults by combining housing, educational opportunities, socialization, and medical research access, enriching the broader campus community.

The project includes three new towers featuring 127 independent living apartments with open floor plans, covered parking, rooftop decks, landscaped commons, a café, and classroom spaces. The new buildings will be directly connected to Edenwald’s existing campus, which is abutting from the south. Residents will enjoy access to Edenwald’s pool and fitness center, along with Goucher’s library and performing arts events. This intergenerational environment will provide Edenwald residents with unique learning experiences while fostering collaboration between students and seniors.
